Artist wins prestigious photography prize with AI, refuses the award, gets scrubbed from the competition, and says we need to talk about banning AI from this stuff-

Last year saw the emergence of public-facing AI tools, and an ongoing slew of stories about how people are using the tech, as well as the debate over what it should be used for. Now an artist, who calls himself a “cheeky monkey”, has shocked the photography world by winning one of its major prizes, before revealing the ‘photograph’ was an AI creation, refusing the award, and calling for AI to be banned from such competitions.

German artist Boris Eldagsen entered and won the creative open category at last week’s Sony World Photography Awards with an image called Pseudomnesia: The Electrician. As part of the judging process he also gave the judges certain assurances about the work, claiming it was a “co-creation” of AI. The creative category is specifically about original and …

‘Free’ Ark- Survival Evolved upgrade turns out not to be free, and a lot of players are mad-

After teasing a free Unreal Engine 5-powered upgrade to the six-year-old Ark: Survival Evolved in January, developer Studio Wildcard said on Friday that players will actually have to pay for it if they want it—and fans, as you might expect, are not happy.

“The UE5 tease a couple weeks back is referring to in-the-works complete free upgrade/remaster of Ark Survival Evolved in Unreal Engine 5,” Studio Wildcard co-founder Jeremy Stieglitz tweeted in January. “Not a cinematic. We haven’t officially announced the Ark UE5 upgrade yet ’cause there’s other major things we wanna show then as well.”

The official announcement of Ark: Survival Ascended, as the UE5 remaster is known, arrived last week, but notably without the “free” part. Instead, Studio Wildcard said “players will…

‘For fun and challenge-‘ The team that ported Jak and Daxter to PC has done the same for Jak 2-

After successfully porting the Naughty Dog PS2 classic, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy to PC last June, the OpenGOAL team has now done the same for its edgy, GTA-influenced sequel, Jak 2 (Jak 2: Renegade for you PAL region kiddies). Though still in beta, Jak 2 is playable from start to finish through OpenGOAL.

This is distinct from just running the game on an emulator: the OpenGOAL team reverse-engineered the games to run natively on PC, avoiding the need to emulate a PlayStation 2 at all. The OpenGOAL project is completely legal on a similar basis to emulators, however, as it was built from the bottom up without incorporating any proprietary Sony or Naughty Dog tech—you need an ISO image from your own copy of Jak 2 to use with OpenGOAL’s launcher.

The Jak and Da…

Elon Musk claims Tesla could build a silicon foundry and make its own chips, but says ‘I sure hope we don’t have to’-

Legendary game developer John Carmack recently stated on Twitter that competing against TSMC head on was pretty much impossible. But he then asked his followers how less impossible it would be for a big tech company to make its own bespoke chips, rather than competing against the general purpose companies. Cue one small reply from a certain Elon Musk: “Tesla could do it, but I sure hope we don’t have to.”

Now, just to be clear on something, Musk’s tweet wasn’t about Tesla trying to become the next TSMC. After all, if the likes of Samsung, GlobalFoundries, and even Intel struggle, then somebody stepping into the battlefield from scratch stands zero chance. Instead, he was referring to Carmack’s point that not only is competing against TSMC nigh on impossible, it’s equally cha…

Forget the rocket launcher, you can annihilate one of Resident Evil 4 remake’s toughest bosses with a couple of eggs-

I love Ramón Salazar, Resident Evil 4’s ridiculous little lord boy who manages to look like a child and an old man all at once, while somehow only being 20 years old, but his boss fight can be a bit of a chore in the recent remake. Luckily, there’s a way around it: Pelt that tiny aristo with eggs.

Spotted by Polygon, the trick actually involves RE4’s rare golden eggs, which you’d normally use to fully restore your health. But if you hang onto the ones you pick up long enough to use them in Salazar’s boss fight, you can take him down in just a couple of tosses. It works in any difficulty mode, too: You can see Larxa, a streamer, obliterate him using the method in hardcore mode in the tweet below.

The only trouble is that golden eggs can be hard to find, and you’ll prob…
